I won a Science Fair 150 in 1 Kit on Ebay

Post by Chuckt » Mon Mar 03, 2014 2:05 pm

When I was a kid, I had a Science Fair 75 in 1 Kit from Radio Shack but the transistor went bad and I was missing a lot of the wires due to no fault of mine own.
Parts went bad to my friends trying to overpower parts and I remember hearing a transistor go "pop" and that was the end of it.

I bid on one and won. If any of the parts are bad, I will try to fix it because I'm sure I will know the values of all the parts.
I have a 200 and 1 kit from another company but I always wanted this kit because I remember all of the fun times.

I heard Science Fair made a 160 in 1 kit:

The one I got is good enough.

Nice one Chuck!

I remember having one of those when I was a kid! They are fantastic :)

in fact, I have been wanting to design an updated version of one of these for a long time now. Something like 100 projects in 1 but it would have an Arduino in it, an led matrix, some buttons, an lcd display a speaker etc...

That would be great fun for people just starting out with programming I think.

How much did this one cost?

It is used and years old.
They are hard to bid on because people snatch them up.
I got mine at $20 plus about $8 dollars shipping.
I should have got it for less than $20 but Ebay allows users to underbid which drives up my cost.
In other words, I put in my high bid and people underbid which drove the price up to my maximum bid even though their bid wasn't a winning bid.

After all these years, I expect the capacitors to be dried up but the values are on the cardboard board.

Back in the day, I think you could pay more than $60 for kits half this big and I think the expensive part is the case as it was made out of some kind of wood.

I think the schematic is worth the cost.

When I was 11 or so, I knew a kid who had one, and I druled over it and dreamed of having something like that someday. My development took a somewhat different path though. Now I have a couple hundred thousand parts here in my office at home, including thousands of ICs, and maybe another half a million parts in the garage.

They used a type of spring to connect the wires. I wish I knew what they are called.

What would we use today?
Breadboard?
Terminals?
Pin Headers?
Dual Row Dupont Connectors and Pins?
Plugs?
A combination?
Something else?

Well your component stocks certainly makes mine seem insignificant!

Any chance you have any photo's of your office / garage - I'd love to see all those parts!

Good question Chuck, I was planning on having a whole heap of male headers sticking up out of the board, then to make complete circuits you would have a whole heap of different length female dupont connectors (just like you mentioned above). It's very cost effective and they come in all sorts of colors!
