I have heard that 32-bit devices have quite a bit more of a learning curve compared to the good 'ol 8-bit devices

I read this last week that breadboards are limited to about 50 MHZ and these chips are running at 40 MHZ so I think there might be a limit somewhere before you have to use Diptrace or Eagle to make your own boards.

Ive read that breadboards are limited to only 10Mhz, but at my own experiences I have not had any issues running at 64Mhz and more!, you are only limited to the amount of voltage and current ratings. unless your building circuits like this!? pic below:

This is where I read it.

The pic is on my list to get started on. I'm also chasing a beaglebone sbc / microcontroller and I'm awaiting a book on Linux so maybe I'll order a beaglebone after Christmas.

Cool thank you for sharing that link.. the beagleboard looks like some advanced board!

The newer board is the Beaglebone and it is cheaper than the Beagleboard. They call their daughterboard "capes" instead of "shields" like Arduino. It is basically a 1 GHZ processor and its operating system is Linux. I basically want to bypass their bootloader and write my own operating system and one of the users on another forum has helped me immensely through email on how to do that. I just have to figure out a memory map for the unit and then figure out how it works.

A lot of the C-64 and Amiga users still have a following and they haven't been swayed by the Gameduino or Beaglebone offerings. They are more interested in the Rasberry Pi for about $25.

I looked at an old Atari and their keyboard has C-64 like drawings on the keyboard and I would like to create "Commodore 64-like" concepts on a newer computer. The Gameduino and Beaglebone could be programmed to follow in this tradition.

That sounds like a fantastic project chuck! (seeing as I am a big fan of the retro video games / computers)

Would love to see how it pans out for you.

Thank you. I still have to stay around and learn your tutorials because I don't know anything about programming microcontrollers and you will be a source of my learning. I believe I want to stay here and contribute here with the pics. A realistic roadmap of where I'm at is this: The Beaglebone is probably for beginners if they are using Linux but probably not for beginners if they are trying to root it and learn how it works. I'd probably need two Beaglebones: one for Linux and one for reprogramming so I'll probably leave mine with Linux for a long time until I can map the memory map.

I spent a month visiting the hospital. My wife was on bed rest and my second son was born six weeks premature and he spent two weeks in the NICU (Natal Intensive Care Unit). My son just came home yesterday; I already have my hands full and I learned with the first one that the first three months are hard until they grow and the time between feedings increases after three months or so as needed.

Basically, I can read maybe a page or two before I either hear "Daddy" so I don't get anything done. I suppose I can add "wah" to that. I come home and by the time my son is in bed, I'm too tired to work on a lot of stuff. My wife is also a human pacifier so to help her, I have to be involved as it is required to have a family and to have a meaningful relationship.

Where I'm at: I know how to program. I ordered a book to help me learn Linux and it hasn't shown up yet. I have collected resistors, capacitors, wires, breadboards, piezo speakers and leds. I have a junk box with motors and other things. I have power supplies and prototyping (through the hole) boards. I have a soldering iron and two different LCDs. I have an SD card breakout board which is extra because the Beaglebone has one on the board already.

I may get a Beaglebone for Christmas. What I'm up against is being able to root the Beaglebone. I have an article but I don't have a memory map. I have to learn Linux and I have to find the software for writing in machine language for the Beaglebone. I'm relying on the other open source projects and other users to learn. The reference manual for one of the chips in the board is 3,500 pages and TI doesn't feel like it is their responsibility to help me because they didn't make the Beaglebone. It is learning something that could be a little intimidating for me.

I'm up against being able to root the Beaglebone Until then, I'll be limited to writing programs in Linux. I'll then have to learn some complex addressings schemes and I might have to write an SD card driver because I don't think I could use some one else's unless it was open source.

I'm probably looking at a timeline of 3-5 years to get sometime done if I can do it at all. These are things I've never done before and my eyes are always bigger than my ability. I just believe that I can make my efforts fruitful if I chip away at it long enough. If I get something accomplished, I'll will try to share the results with everyone if I can.

The worst scenario is that I'm throwing money away and that I will at least fail for much of the beginning. I also don't have a budget for this stuff anymore so I'm stuck with what I have to use with it. That means other prototyping boards to use with the Beaglebone are out of my reach for now until the situation changes. The good news is that because of this shortage, you will be leading the way as I'll have to learn your tutorials and I'll be limited to my Pikit2 and free samples from Microchip.

This total frequency of perf boards and breadboards came up at 6502.org on this link:

I didn't get a beaglebone for Christmas and I was reading that one of the commodore engineers had 1,000 books on electronics and has a license in fixing tv's and I just feel imtimidated to go any further right now.

I'm under the weather right now.

Use PICKIT2 to program PIC32′s

Use PICKIT2 to program PIC32′s
http://dangerousprototypes.com/2012/01/ ... am-pic32s/

There is a program called pic32prog:

http://code.google.com/p/pic32prog/

The google code product page is:

http://code.google.com/p/pic32prog/wiki/README

It is good to see development for the Pickit 2.

And the other post I read about a Pic16F145X Full speed USB that doesn't need an external crystal so it is easier to breadboard:
