http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcpl ... e=en012156The purpose of this paper is to provide the entry point for information on programming Microchip?s 8-bit microcontrollers. While we can?t cover every programming specification in detail, we can give you a good idea of how the process works and show you what to look for in a specification. We?ll also touch briefly on how in-system programmability can affect an application?s design and finish with other programming and diagnostic innovations that make applications more reliable.

Re: PICmicro® Device Programming: What You Always Wanted to
A couple of months ago I tried their MPLAB for Linux. The purpose was to get going on the PIC18. I downloaded two versions a few weeks apart. One would not install, and the other crashed before I could get to square 1. I don't think they're committed to Linux. I don't have this trouble with any other Linux software.

I used to use Ubuntu Linux a few years ago and tried out piklab which was an alternative to MPLAB, I don't think I ever used MPLAB on linux at all.
