This USB stick boots your computer even if you don't have a working hard drive.

And I'm pretty sure you don't have to buy a USB thumbdrive to run Linux but it is almost turning into a requirement to learn these days.

It looks as though they have found a way to make money off something that you can make yourself :)

I use unetbootin to make bootable linux USB sticks. They are very handy!
