MPLAB Xpress is a perfect starting point for new users of PIC® microcontrollers—no downloads, no machine configuration, and no waiting are necessary to get started on your system development.

MPLAB® Xpress is cloud based and provides:
•Simplified IDE to get started
•No software installation required
•Simulate now – no board necessary
•Use your existing myMicrochip Login credentials to save your work in the cloud
•Begin from library of existing projects
•Evaluation of the most recent Compilers, and PRO optimizations
There is also a self paced guide at:

Throw away your Arduino? Hello Microchip? Works like a thumb drive. I heard no one is going to get upset because ARM Mbed had this for years.

Very nice find Chuck. I'd love to see a vibrant community for this. I have always had a soft spot for PIC micro's rather than AVR's and over the last number of years, AVR's seem to be dominating the hobby market and I guess this is largely due to the amazing success of the Arduino platform. At the moment though I am still plodding along with Swordfish Basic :)

Microchip bought Atmel so I think bringing Microchip up to spec with Arduino is good marketing for their already existing market which should bring more hobbyists working with Microchip. It is better for the community overall.

Wow, I had no idea!

I just did some reading up on it then. Microchip is obviously doing very well then.
