"Folks are finding that they can't sell their home if they don't have a broadband connection, let alone a fiber connection," Frederick said.

Australia is quite behind with broadband internet. Our download speed max's out at about 600KB/s
Re: Digital Trend: Can't sell your home without broadband
Verizon, our local phone company, has spent a lot of money and effort to try to get us to switch to FiOS fiber-optic service. It is much faster than our DSL which is 3MbPS IIRC, and is really for those who want to download a feature-length movie in a couple of seconds. But for what?? TV is their only barganing chip, and we don't watch TV, so we're definitely not paying a service for cable or satellite TV. Our TV goes months without getting turned on, and we have 70 channels available from the 40-year-old antenna on the roof anyway. But after my parents' experience with FiOS, there's no way we would get it. Our DSL is plenty fast for a couple of us to be watching YouTube videos at once.

If you do get FIOS, Garth, be vigilant. The home wiring is yours and it is your property. Tell them not to rip the copper wire out when installing FIOS. They do this to make it more difficult to go to the competition.Garth wrote:Verizon, our local phone company, has spent a lot of money and effort to try to get us to switch to FiOS fiber-optic service. But in case they are still doing this, you have to be vigilant and tell the installer it is not his property to rip out.

Yes, thanks, we would do the installation ourselves. Our son has the tool to terminate the fiber-optic connectors, and has done a lot of cabling for phone and computer networks in his work.
