Unfortunately I don't have the sourcecode anymore.

I only have the hex file. It is very similar to the great race though if you wanted to have a look at that one.

can i burn the .hex into a pic16f628a?

Unfortunately not. The 628a / 648a chips don't have enough I/O ports to make it work.

i think i have ordered the wrong matrix, it's all green dot, so i cannot see the red dot, so ... i would think of buying this one : http://www.sparkfun.com/products/681, is it okay for this game?
do i need to buy a common cathode or common anode?

Just to note that those sparkfun matrix's are Common Cathode. you need Common Anode!.

I've never seen those in the common cathode variety!
