Pixel Land is a game that sets out to answer the age old question “Can a game contained within only 64 pixels, be fun, challenging and addictive?” Well I think the answer is Yes!

Pixel Land is based around the classic run and jump style games popularised throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. The key difference is that the game area is contained within an 8 Pixel by 8 Pixel environment.

But don’t let the simplistic graphics fool you! This game is very challenging particularly toward the later levels and will require some finely tuned gaming skills in order to complete it.

The Story

You (Pixelman) and your girlfriend (Pixelwoman) are going for a walk through the park oneday. All is going well and you manage to find the courage to ask Pixelwoman to marry you. Just moments after giving her the ring, members of the pixel gang come in and kidnap Pixelwoman right before your eyes.

Your mission is to take on the pixel gang through 24 levels of ever increasing difficulty. Although it’s going to be tough - you will have access to a range of power-ups throughout the game which are hidden in various blocks in each level.

Playing The Game

While the game is in play, you have access to four buttons.

  1. ★ The left and right buttons will move your character in the respective direction  through the current level.

  2. ★The pause button will pause the game and take you back to the title screen.

  3. ★The jump button will cause your character to jump in the air in order to jump on / over enemies, blocks and walls, gaps and lava.


The main game screen also presents you with some game information including current score, current level and number of lives remaining.

Defeating Enemies

You can defeat enemies in one of three ways.

  1. ★ Stomp on top of them.

  2. ★ Run into them while you have invincibility.

  3. ★ Hit the block that they are standing on, from underneath.


Each time you defeat an enemy, you will be awarded with 250 points.

End Of Level Boss’s

At the end of every fourth level, you will need to take on an end of level boss. These are the tough guys who take three hits to defeat. The only way that you can defeat them is by stomping on top of them.

Sometimes the end of level boss will move from one side of the screen to the other (pausing at each end) and sometimes the end of level boss will disappear from the screen, reappear at a random location at the top of the screen and drop down to the floor again.

Not only that - but most of the end of level boss’s are backed up by a bouncing fireball or a levitating acid blob (which follows you around the screen) or both!

Power-Ups

There are various power-ups hidden within certain blocks in each level.

These are the three types of power-ups available.

  1. ★ Green = Extra Life

  2. ★ Yellow = Invincibility

  3. ★ Purple = Super Pixel Power (allows you to break blocks)

Points and Scoring

There are many ways to build up your points tally.

  1. ★ Hit a standard block = 25 points

  2. ★ Break a standard block = 50 points

  3. ★ Hit a power-up block = 100 points

  4. ★ Defeat an Enemy = 250 points

  5. ★ Collect a power-up = 1,000 points

  6. ★ 20,000 points bonus for each life remaining when the game is complete

  7. ★ Bonus points for completing levels quickly

  8. ★ You will lose 20,000 points if you select to continue the game once all of your lives have been lost.

Game Center Functionality

Pixel Bros is made all the more better by featuring Apple’s Game Center functionality. Not only does this allow you to compare your score with your friends and others playing this game, but you also have various achievements to obtain throughout the game.

These achievements are as follows.

  1. ★ Find all power-ups in level 1

  2. ★ Jump on an enemy, then bounce off him and hit a power-up block (without hitting the ground)

  3. ★ Bounce off one enemy onto another (without hitting the ground)

  4. ★ Complete the first two levels without losing a life.

  5. ★ Defeat all enemies in one level with a single invincibilty.

  6. ★ Complete the first four levels without losing a life.

  7. ★ Defeat all enemies from all levels.

  8. ★ Find all power-ups in level 23.

  9. ★ Complete the game.

  10. ★ Complete the game without using a continue.
